Research Support Scheme: Call for Applications
Research is an integral part of our University’s Mission and our aim is to embed the research carried out by staff and postgraduate research students into the Schools to support and enhance the taught courses portfolio at post graduate and undergraduate levels.
The University’s Research Strategy clearly sets out our ambitions, targets and development plans over the next 5 years, with a particular emphasis on building capacity as we seek to achieve Research Degree Awarding Powers.
The growth in our research capabilities over the past few years is demonstrated by the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results. The University has grown its research capability and capacity to move up the Times Higher Education Table of Excellence to rank 55th out of 132 universities (from 61st in 2001) and 5th out of 10 in Wales.
All research subject areas submitted by the University of Wales, Newport achieved international recognition, with 55% of its research classed as of quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour (3*) and 7% classed as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour (4*).
The best results came in Art and Design – Newport submitted a joint bid in this area with the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC). Seventy per cent of research assessed was deemed to be world leading or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour (3* and above), which resulted in ranking 12th out of 70 universities – and the best in Wales.
This was a unique bid in the subject area and reflected the quality of work produced by the two South Wales universities who have worked in close collaboration for many years. Both institutions fared well in the 2001 RAE earning scores of 5 (Newport) and 4 (UWIC), with the latest results cementing their international reputations.
Research is carried out at the level of individuals, groups, research centres and in collaboration with local, national and international colleagues. Key indicators of research activity, such as publications, research grant awards, postgraduate research degree awards and knowledge transfer activities confirm our growing ability to undertake and deliver top class research in a broad array of subject areas.
In order to support the development of our research culture the Research webpages have been designed to contain useful information for external viewers, staff and postgraduate research students.
